In the Arab region, the importance of personal data privacy can be clearly seen in a variety of country-level examples. (...) This article will explore copyright law, patents and personal data protection, interrelated topics which Governments have struggled to address. (...) This decision marks an important turning point in the balance of personal data privacy. What could at one time have been claimed as the property of a corporation is now considered personal.

Policing, data retention, and facial recognition technology Following EHRC’s submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy, the ECtHR has ruled on Catt v the United Kingdom. 19 The ECtHR found that the UK Government violated the right to privacy (Article 8 ECHR) of the applicant and while there was a pressing need to collect the personal data about the applicant, there was no pressing need to retain it. The ruling called for increased safeguards for personal data collected overtly by the police. The ECtHR also noted that the absence of effective safeguards was of particular concern in relation to personal information about political opinions, where retention could have a ‘chilling effect’ on the right to engage in peaceful protest.

Subsequent regulations have been adopted in accordance with the two above- mentioned laws, including the State standards for higher education as well as the regulations for organizing the activities of preschool organizations (Order No. 708 of the Ministry of Education and Science), which were approved on 10 July 2000.7 As regards the rights of the child, an important role devolves upon the Committee on the Protection of Children’s Rights, established on 21 February 2006 under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Science.8 The Committee has the competence to consider personal appeals on child rights issues from the general public as well as matters related to the quality of educational services for children provided by State and public institutions.
