Phone-ins, newsletters, listening groups, viewer groups at the community level through 'Kalyani clubs' supplement the overall effort. (...) It is estimated that Kalyani reaches almost 500 million viewers across the country. Has it helped? A 2008 market study showed that 41% of all households in India where Kalyani is shown watched it in the last six months -- higher than the viewership of other popular programmes. Viewership was particularly high in rural areas. Kalyani viewers had significantly higher exposure to health messages (97%), as compared to non-Kalyani viewers (88%).6 For instance, knowledge of HIV/AIDS was higher and attitude towards people living with HIV/AIDS was positive among Kalyani viewers.
