Perhaps due to the easy access and abundant availability of food enriched with vitamin A, the situation of vitamin A deficiency in Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador is only low to moderate among children under three years old. (...) Colombia did not provide vitamin A supplementation since they decreed to fortify sugar with vitamin A in 1998. (...) Research will be undertaken in order to assess the level of vitamin A deficiency in each country. According to the results, the programme will support each country to identify suitable food types for fortification with vitamin A. 25.

C’est en vue d’améliorer la couverture de supplémentation en vitamine A des enfants de 6-59 mois, que le ministère de la santé et ses partenaires techniques et financiers, à savoir l'UNICEF avec l'appui de fonds du gouvernement canadien et HKI, ont joint leurs efforts pour organiser cette campagne de supplémentation en vitamine A. (...) Nous, les partenaires techniques et financiers, lançons solennellement un appel aux autorités à s’engager à faciliter l’accès aux ménages des équipes chargées d’administrer la vitamine A aux enfants  ». La supplémentation en vitamine A permet de réduire de 20 à 35 % la mortalité infanto-juvénile due à certaines maladies infectieuses et parasitaires.

In real life situations, during temperature excursion and storage RUTF's are also at risk of being exposed to conditions over 400C which may further lead to degradation of vitamin A levels in the product. Vitamin A in Vitamin and Mineral Premix Vitamin A is one of the most chemically unstable vitamins and degrades in the presence of external factors including temperature, oxygen, humidity and lightxv,xvi . Exposure to these factors leads to degradation during its shelf life period. Vitamin A is widely used in RUTF by means of commercial vitamin & mineral premix. (...) Historical vitamin A supplementation of 100000 - 200000 IU given to SAM children routinely, provided justification for the expert group to consider increasing the maximum levels of vitamin A in RUTF to ensure that the revised daily vitamin A level of 5000IU (1.5mcg) is achieved.

Dans le cadre de la lutte contre les carences en vitamine A, des suppléments de cette vitamine ont été distribués dans les dispensaires à l’occasion des vaccinations normales en Équateur, au Pérou et au Venezuela. (...) La Colombie n’a pas mené de supplémentation en vitamine A, ayant décidé par décret en 1999 d’enrichir le sucre en vitamine A.

As the NID re-started, the Government of Bangladesh decided to integrate National Vitamin A Plus Campaign (NVAC) with polio immunization. With support from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Micronutrient Initiative, UNICEF and WHO, all eligible children will be able to boost their immunity with the intake of a Vitamin A capsule during the NID. Vitamin A deficiency poses a major threat to the health and survival of children and mothers. (...) During the 18th NID in January 2010, the polio and vitamin A coverage was 92 per cent and 96 per cent respectively.
