The topics discussed
included measuring mobile money (jointly with EGTI), child online protection and e-waste indicators
in household surveys.
4. (...) The second day of the EGH started with a session on e-waste indicators in household surveys. Rosie
McDonald of the ITU presented the EACO Regional E-waste Data Harmonization project, which will
provide technical assistance to six East African Communications Organisation members to harmonize
e-waste data collection and sustain a regional e-waste database maintained by the EACO Secretariat.
(...) This will serve as input into the work of the EGH subgroup
on e-waste.
13. Juan Daniel Oviedo, EGH Chair and Chief Director Statistician of Colombia then presented progress of
the subgroup on e-waste indicators.

Turning waste into money and heat – a win-win for people and the environment
August 19, 2020
In Armenia where forests make up around 11 percent of the territory, every single tree matters. (...) The fund also has bought about 300 tons of straw from around 80 households to make briquettes: what was previously a waste leading to ecological issues because people were burning the straw, became a source of money.
510 tons of briquettes saved 1275 cubic meters of firewood in its turn reducing CO2 emissions by more than 900 tons. (...) Living in harmony with the forest, side by side with your children and family, using waste but not wasting anything: these may seem like small things, but they are things we should all care about”.

Challenges in the ESM of E-waste
Only about 15% of the e-waste produced worldwide is recycled formally (UNU-2014)- E-waste generation trends on the rise
Recycling of e-waste is carried out by the informal sector in an unsound manner difficulties in involving this sector in formal activities
Challenges in the ESM of E-waste
Exposure of vulnerable populations such as women and children around dump sites has impact across generations

Challenges in the ESM of E-waste
Need for regional cooperation to arrive to a critical mass for sustainable recycling operations
The flow of e-waste around the world is not only a story of dumping.
E-waste moves around the world because it has value in terms of its materials, its components, and its reuse potential.
