REORIENTATION OF UNITED NATIONS ACTIVITIES IN THE FIELD OF PUBLIC INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS : REPORT OF THE SECRETARY-GENERAL
So far, a number of posts have been redeployed to the Information Technology Section from within the Department to bolster the management of the United Nations web sites. To standardize the management of the web sites in all official languages, by its resolution 54/250, part VII, the General Assembly decided to convert the positions of coordinators for the web sites in Arabic, Chinese and Russian to established posts. Regular postings to the web site of information received directly from field missions, which began in 1999 with the United Nations missions in East Timor (UNAMET, now UNTAET) and in Kosovo (UNMIK), have become regular features of the web site, which has become an invaluable channel for reaching the media that serve audiences in mission areas as well as internationally. (...) The Library’s web site was accessed 1.5 million times in 1999.

The use of Unicode has also resulted in a more uniform appearance of web pages in all official languages. These innovations and productivity improvements through the use of internally developed database applications have also permitted implementation of sites in different languages to be achieved within existing resources. (...) More sophisticated analysis will permit prioritization to topics of interest across languages. The Web Services Section continuously monitors and analyses site usage and is providing nearly 150 daily and monthly log analysis statistics. (...) In collaboration with the Training Service of the Office of Human Resources Management, the Department has brought specialized training in relevant web development software in-house. This cost-effective measure has afforded an opportunity to all staff working on their respective sites to enhance their skills and be more productive.

In December 1997, after its consideration of a report on the simultaneous availability of parliamentary documentation in electronic form in the six official languages on the United Nations web site, the General Assembly also requested that the texts of all new public documents be made available on the United Nations web site in all six official languages. (...) As ITSD has implemented a direct access function allowing authorized web sites to make hyperlinks connecting directly to documents on ODS, other web sites besides the United Nations main web site could take advantage of this facility. (...) While such documents are made available for a certain duration on the respective web sites of those duty stations, this cannot be considered as an alternative to the use of ODS for the storage and retrieval of parliamentary documents.
