Microsoft PowerPoint - FAO examples from North America North American forest pest experience Kerry Britton Hesham Abuelnaga Eric Allen Shane Sela Economic study* estimates: Likely pathways of 81 forest pests introduced into the US: – Nursery stock = 63% – Wood & WPM = 22% – Hitchhikers = 6% – Intentional = 1% * Preliminary data from a study funded by The Nature Conservancy, conducted at the National Center for Environmental Analysis and Synthesis, Univ. (...) Nursery stock may require this in future, as Q37 requirements are revised. export certification of wood and non- wood products specialty products may require special handling not compatible with 56/30, e.g. wood shavings Example: ISPM-15 establishment of import controls for wood and non-wood products ISPM-15 Plants for Planting (NAPPO 24 implementation) Federal order restricting hosts of ALB & CLB inspection of wood and non- wood products Wood handicrafts - currently not regulated (except recently advertised requirements for treatment for articles from China) Plants for Planting - some genera blacklisted – Most imported with inspection and phytosanitary certificate requirements determination of equivalence of phytosanitary measures alternatives to methyl bromide e.g., microwave TPPT needs to decide which pests are required (3 hardiest pests for each trt might differ). pest reporting obligations notification of non-compliance and emergency action National Plant Diagnostic Network NAPPO alerts NOTE: AT present are countries only required to report new pest outbreaks and pests on other countries black lists????

In addition, there will be a number of policy dialogues, organized by partner organizations, for example on harvested wood products, wood energy, potential sustainable wood supply, gender and forestry, climate change and forest biodiversity, research, forest law enforcement and governance. (...) A typical cubic metre (m3) of softwood logs (1.12 m3 over bark) processed in a North American sawmill, produces the following:  0.34 m3 of chips which can be used for paper, fibreboard, wood energy of which:  approx. 0.30 m3 are green (from the sawmill)  0.04 m3 are dry (from the planning mill)  0.07 m3 of sawdust that can be used for fibreboard, particleboard, wood pellets (energy), low grade paper  0.59 m3 of rough green sawnwood (lumber), which if dried and planed will result in  0.47 m3 of dry-finished sawnwood (lumber)  0.03 m3 of volume loss due to shrinkage  and 0.09 m3 in planer shavings (used for similar purposes as sawdust and often used as animal bedding)  While not accounted for in UNECE statistics on logs (roundwood), 0.12 m3 of bark is commonly attached to a m3 of softwood log volume, which is generally used as boiler fuel (energy), mulch or decorative ground cover. (...) A policy dialogue on wood energy in the region will provide information on recent developments and trends.
