USE OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION NETWORKS : NOTE / BY THE SECRETARIAT
The
personal mobile communications market worldwide has grown to 50 million subscribers in 1995 from its inception
in 1986. (...) Those new financially sound customers will be able to
buy all the state-of the-art electronic devices available on the market as well as the value-added telecommunications
services.
9. (...) A new satellite industry based on drastic progress in computer and microchip technology is currently emerging
in response to this consumer market demand. The total communications satellite market will account for some 67.5
percent of the space missions planned for the next 10 year and the market for communications satellites for the same
period has been estimated in the range of US$ 8 billion to US$ 15 billion.

GLOBALIZATION AND ITS IMPACT ON THE FULL
ENJOYMENT OF ALL HUMAN RIGHTS
Mr. Chairman,
The worldwide concern that has been shown for the question of globalization during the
last 10 years is possibly greater than that shown for any other issue at the international level.
(...) Increasing unemployment, reduced wages, deteriorating standards of living, the lesser role that
Governments are playing in the social security provided by the State, as well as the free rein that
is being given to market mechanisms and the increasing disparity in the distribution of income,
are among the most outstanding features that will characterize socio-economic life in most
countries of the world in the age of globalization.
(...) Insofar
as globalization implies free trade, market liberalization, the removal of obstacles and barriers to
the movement of capital, the imposition of structural adjustment programmes and privatization
and increasing disparities between the rich and the poor, it will entail a deterioration in the socio-
economic situation and the transfer of the economic sovereignty of States to dominant
international economic institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and
transnational corporations.

2017. (...) It is a global

LETTER DATED 97/02/18 FROM THE PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVES OF BRAZIL AND NORWAY TO THE UNITED NATIONS ADDRESSED TO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL
If we integrate them into the market economy only using existing mechanisms then
we would suffer unbearable environmental stress. (...) Questions of international competition mean
that more should be done to coordinate efforts to internalize
environmental costs into market prices.

- Governments are also major consumers and can help shape markets
through better understanding of their use of goods and services and
incorporating environmental criteria into procurement policies.
(...) But even
if these commitments were achieved, additional action would be
required to reorient policy frameworks and financial markets to drive
sustainable production and consumption.

Based on practical examples, presentations and the subsequent discussion
illustrated the specificities of the profiling methods in public administration and
underscored the advantages and disadvantages of these methods:
a) The public sector is taken into account and is generally treated with a
specific method;
b) The public sector is heterogeneous, each country has its own problems;
с) The profiling in public sector is a necessary and an important activity to
update BR;
d) The distinction between market and non market activities in the public
sector is a central activity of the profiling in public sector;
е) The profiling of the public enterprise needs a clear and harmonized
methodology;
f) Special treatment of the public sector improves the statistical system
(coherence).
(...) The goal was to discuss issues relevant to the widening of the function of
statistical BRs in response to the worldwide globalization and related developments.

ECE/FAO monitors and analyses these trends with data, publications and official and
transparent discussions on market trends and influences, as well as the links between
markets and policy.
(...) In North America, net exports have fallen sharply, as a result of Canada’s steady
withdrawal from overseas markets in Asia and Europe, to concentrate on the huge
neighbouring US market, in particular supplying wood products for US residential
construction. (...) Investment managers also mentioned the critical
importance of active, competitive markets for the primary forest products they grow.
