GLOBALIZATION AND ITS IMPACT ON THE FULL
ENJOYMENT OF ALL HUMAN RIGHTS
Mr. Chairman,
The worldwide concern that has been shown for the question of globalization during the
last 10 years is possibly greater than that shown for any other issue at the international level.
(...) Increasing unemployment, reduced wages, deteriorating standards of living, the lesser role that
Governments are playing in the social security provided by the State, as well as the free rein that
is being given to market mechanisms and the increasing disparity in the distribution of income,
are among the most outstanding features that will characterize socio-economic life in most
countries of the world in the age of globalization.
(...) Insofar
as globalization implies free trade, market liberalization, the removal of obstacles and barriers to
the movement of capital, the imposition of structural adjustment programmes and privatization
and increasing disparities between the rich and the poor, it will entail a deterioration in the socio-
economic situation and the transfer of the economic sovereignty of States to dominant
international economic institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and
transnational corporations.

VISIT TO THE NETHERLANDS : REPORT OF THE INDEPENDENT EXPERT ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY
The Netherlands will continue to improve the position of women and girls worldwide
and to attain gender equality. Gender equality contributes to the achievement of a number of
Sustainable Development Goals. (...) Certain groups, however, may need support in finding their place in
the labour market. These include elderly persons, those with a disability, families on low
income, ethnic and other minorities, homeless persons and those with addiction problems.
55. (...) A number of areas of concern were mentioned, such as
greenhouse gas emissions, the gender pay gap and the alignment between education and the
labour market.
64. In addition to the 2030 Agenda, the Dutch Government vowed to contribute actively
to support and promote the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the Addis Ababa
Action Agenda of the Third International Conference on Financing for Development.

Over the last 50 years, the volume of industrial roundwood supplied by the
forests of the region has grown steadily: recent market reports indicate that the very
steep fall registered from 2008, attributable to the general economic crisis and
particularly the collapse of the housing market in many countries, is being reversed.
(...) ECE/FAO monitors and analyses these trends
with data, publications and official and transparent discussions on market trends and
influences, as well as the links between markets and policy.
(...) The FAO study considered that despite weak market conditions around 2010,
there was potential to increase financial investment in timberland, including in
developing countries.
